Chapter Fourteen

Michael plopped down in front of Louise, “I think I’m going crazy.”

Louise smiled and nodded. “Well, that is to be expected, I think,” she said reassuringly.

Michael shook his head as if trying to clear the confusion that had been plaguing him over the past week. “I just don’t know what to think anymore. Everywhere I look I see projections, old stories and assumptions that have clouded my thinking.”

“Until now,” Louise offered.

“Well, that’s the problem,” Michael countered. “I seem to still be having these thoughts, only I’m now conscious of them. And I can’t seem to stop! It’s like they have a life of their own, coming in unprompted. The worst part is that I can see how unhappy they make me. So many of my thoughts are angry or sad or fearful. But I don’t know what to do about them! What am I supposed to do, Louise, really?” Michael had never felt such exasperation as he did now. He felt totally unmoored.

“Oh Michael, I think I understand. Am I correct in saying that you feel out of control? Perhaps like you don’t understand who you are anymore? Is that right?” Louise probed.

“Yes! And I don’t know what to do, Louise!” Michael pleaded.

“And what is it that you’re supposed to do, Michael?” Louise asked softly.

“I don’t know, be better? Fix myself? Get through this? I have to do something!” Michael almost shouted.
